Paulding County was formed from part of Cherokee territory and named after Revolutionary War Patriot John Paulding, who helped capture British spy and Benedict Arnold accomplice, Major John Andre. Dallas, Braswell and Hiram are the three Georgia cities in Paulding County. Dallas was incorporated in February 1954 almost two years after it was established as the county seat in May 1952. The county courthouse was built in 1892 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Dallas is a popular destination for Civil War history buffs. The famous Battle of Pickett’s Mill – where Sherman was turned away from Paulding County towards Kennesaw – was fought more than 125 years ago but the battlefield terrain is almost exactly as it was on that fateful day in 1864. Visitors can hike on three trails located within the 765-acre park, enjoy a battle reenactment and an interactive museum. New Hope Church is another site of a famous battle commemorated by a monument and memorial park. Outdoor enthusiasts take advantage of Northern Georgia’s mild year-round climate on The Silver Comet Trail, a paved 20-mile walking, biking and skating path, which will eventually connect Atlanta to Anniston, Alabama. Red Top Mountain State Park, High Shoal Falls and The Frog, a Georgian-style golf resort are also popular destinations.
